Although I had already lived in Japan for 27 years and had a certain level of self-acquired fluency, I did not have a deep understanding of the grammatical rules, patterns and lexical items. This kept my spoken Japanese from progressing beyond a certain point. My reading and writing lagged even further behind. Thanks to Nishida Sensei, I am finally moving forward. The teachers at Iroha are flexible enough to be able to work with people like me who are a mixture of beginner and advanced. In addition to the lessons they assign me, they are happy to work with information I bring to the class, such as an interesting sign I might find on a subway station. Each lesson is a pleasure, and I find I am able to incorporate the new knowledge I am acquiring into the things I taught myself over the years. At the same time, I am becoming able to self-correct and "unlearn" the things I thought were correct but which, in fact, are not. The combination of patience, sensitivity and effective teaching methods is what sets Iroha apart. I recommend them highly.
